Ways to Help a Domestic Violence Shelter From Afar

An out-of-town relative recently told me that she loves what Chez Hope does and wants to help but isn’t sure how to do that without physically being here to paint walls and such.  That got me thinking.

So we made a list.  How can you help without being here?

1Share our message. If you follow us on Facebook, share our posts with your friends. You never know who might need our help or who might be in our area and looking for ways to get involved.  You can also follow us on Twitter or subscribe to our email list.  Then you can retweet us, #FollowFriday us, and forward our emails to people you think might be interested in what we have to say!

You never know who you will touch that needs to hear what you have to say.  Even if the person that needs help doesn’t live anywhere near here, we can always point them in the direction of the closest help to where they are.  Our goal is not just to end Domestic Violence in St. Mary and Assumption Parishes, but in all of the country and even the world.  Caring doesn’t end at the parish line.

Sharing our message is a great way to get involved and it doesn’t cost a thing!

2Promote our events. We only have a handful of fundraising events each year and they support the great financial demands of a program as large as ours. If you visit our area or it is within reasonable driving distance, make plans to attend an event or two!  If you have friends or family in the area, why not give them tickets to one of our events as a gift?  We have a fabulous Painting For a Purpose Party in December that would make a great early Christmas gift!  Or you could sponsor a Trivia Night Team!

Promoting our events could also include sharing them on Social Media and e-mail.  Don’t forget about word-of-mouth advertising!  We love it and it’s free!

3Directly contribute financially. Of course, we are always happy to accept your financial donations. The majority of the income that we receive is restricted in use, meaning that some grants pay only for specific salaries while others pay only for printed materials and so on.  There are many expenses, such as building maintenance and utility costs, that are not covered by these types of funding sources.

A great example of this is our unofficial Cookie Appreciation Fund.  Our Legal Advocate Taylor noticed some law enforcement officers doing a spectacular job helping victims of domestic violence.  She used her own money to buy ingredients to bake cookies for these officers to show them her appreciation.  Word got out that she was paying for this herself and people began to hand her twenty-dollar bills to buy cookie dough.

There are many easy ways to donate money to Chez Hope:

  • You can mail a check directly to us at PO Box 98, Franklin, LA 70538.
  • You can have your bank draft a monthly donation from your account and mail it to us on your behalf.
  • You can use the “Donate Now” button on our website and donate securely through PayPal. You don’t even have to have a PayPal account to do this!
  • You can consider adding Chez Hope to your estate planning.
  • You can designate your United Way contribution to go directly to Chez Hope. The best part about this method is that employers will often match donations, effectively doubling your impact!

Because we are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, all donations are tax deductible and you will receive a receipt in the mail for your tax preparation.

4Become a Voluntourist. Surprisingly, quite a few of our volunteers are not locals. People travel from all over the country to volunteer.  In fact, you may be one of those folks!  While making plans for your next vacation, why not consider a trip to Bayou Country and plan to spend some time sharing your skills and talents with us?

Bring the whole family down and teach your children the value of helping others.

5Hold a Fundraiser or Drive in Your Area. Many of our repeated Voluntourists hold Supply Drives in their communities in the weeks leading up to their trip; you can do the same! If you aren’t planning a trip to our area and shipping costs make a supply drive unfeasible, consider hosting a fundraiser for Chez Hope!  You and your friends could host bake sales, car washes, and rummage sales.  Even children and youth groups can get involved in this one!

We greatly appreciate everyone who wants to work with us to accomplish our mission of ending Domestic Violence, whether near or far, and we hope that this list has inspired you to think about what you can do wherever you might be.  In the grand scheme of things, we are all neighbors.
